Gmail now supports offline use. Accessing the offline mail is faster than accessing the mail on the server, because it is stored on the PC. If there is a lot of mail in the mailbox, Gmail may not make all of it available offline. Contacts cannot be editing offline.

While many new PCs have 64-bit processors, the switch to 64-bit software is very slow. A 64-bit operating system and 64-bit applications should improve performance, but applications need to be optimized for 64-bit or performance may be worse than a 32-bit version. There isn’t much demand for a 64-bit transition, and developers see 32-bit as good enough.

Internet Explorer 8 Released Candidate 1 is faster and more stable than the earlier beta version. A new internal IE7 compatibility list allows IE 8 to act like IE7 when you visit a Web site that is known to work better in IE7. InPrivate Filtering prevents Web sites from collecting information about you. JavaScript is still much slower than other major browsers (Firefox, etc.).

The IRS has a goal of 80% of returns filed electronically.

Citrix and Intel are working on a virtual machine hypervisor for PCs that would allow virtual machines to run directly on the hardware, without a host operating system. Virtual machines should get better performance than a VM running in a product like VMWare Workstation or Virtual PC. Users of Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives are reporting that their drives are locking up or failing. A firmware bug is responsible. Seagate is offering free data recovery for failed drives if necessary. No data is lost with the failure; the drive is just not accessible.
